Vincent van Gogh: The Letters
If any of you kind readers of the blog want to buy me a Christmas prezzie, I would very much like Vincent van Gogh: The Letters, a six-volume hardcover edition of the artist’s complete surviving correspondence, edited by Leo Jansen, Hans Luijten and Nienke Bakker. Van Gogh was a prolific, eloquent, unguarded writer, as the more than 900 letters here demonstrate. He also drew in the middle of letters and in the margins: Sketches of people, landscapes and interiors, many of which appeared again in his paintings. They are all reproduced in the six volumes, along with family photographs, maps of the artist’s whereabouts from year to year, and reproductions of art, by himself and others, that he refers to in the letters. Published by Thames & Hudson.
