I've have some very good things to read this weekend; They are all from one shelf at the National Library, so you can imagine all the treasures that lurk there unexplored. In no particular order:Mystery and Manners: Occasional Prose, by Flannery O'Connor. She writes some of the most brilliant, nail-biting, rivetting short stories, and this collection of essays deals with various aspects of her craft, including her lecture notes on elements of a good short story, and writing fiction in general. It is very inspiring. Did you know she kept 40 peacocks in her backyard?
Another book that deals with words and English usuage, The King's English: A Guide to Modern Usage by Kingsley Amis isn't comprehensive, but is nonetheless important, useful, sensible and besides, informed with a dry wit. Indexed in an alphabetical order, I'm already at 'P'. It is that entertaining, and well-written. Cleopatra's Nose is a collection of essays by Judith Thurman, all from the archives of her work at The New Yorker, including enlightening pieces on Diame Arbus, Richard Avedon, Elsa Schiaperalli, Cristobal Balenciaga, Nadine Gordimer and many more. It's a trove of useful information on all the subjects I'm interested in, so this is a find. Lastly, I'm reading Jane Austen's Letters, edited by Dierdre Le Faye (1995). It's fascinating, of course."If you can't annoy somebody, there's little point in writing." - Kingsley Amis
I have always enjoyed immensely your weekend reading list. It makes your weekends such a thang to look forward to; a beautiful pleasurable routine/ritual. I'm inspired to set up a routine for my weekends too. otherwise i am always spoiling them after waiting much too long for them :P
ReplyDeletePS I luuuurve the first pix so so much. It makes me smile when I see it.
ReplyDeleteI'm happy you like my reading lists. But I don't just read in the weekends of course. I suspect that I read when others watch TV or surf the internet. I watch TV rarely, and I don't look at the internet after dinner, so I have i read from after dinner to bedtime.
ReplyDeleteYes, the picture is sweet...
You are a RULES gal. no internet after dinner. what other quirky habits to share from an old nun?
ReplyDeleteIt's not a quirky habit: I don't know how u all do it, but surfing before bedtime actually overstimulates my mind and i find i can't sleep after when i go on the computer too late. yes, reminds me of children not allowed to play near bedtimes or else they get nightmare, that sort of thing.
ReplyDeletealso, i'm sure this is unscientific but i think the light emitting from the comp screen makes me feel its daytime!!!
i think the comp actually eats up a lot of time, and mindlessly surfing is just horrible, because when u look up the day is GONE!
I LOVE THE QUOTE!
