About Nicholas Hoult

April Crush:Still on the subject of A Single Man, Nicholas Hoult, the glossy youth who rescues the Colin Firth character was a child star. Remember him from About A Boy? Well, he was that chubby boy...
And he became this...

And this...
6' 2" of Oh. My. Gawd.

  2. Anon: Yes, Tom Ford is foaming at the mouth over NH. But no, he has not replaced Jon K, who is still in the fw ads lookbooks or whatever.

  3. it's good to know that there's still a place in Mr Ford's heart for jon k.

i recently re-read a single man. so did the protagonist die of a heart attack in his sleep in the last chapter? or is it one of those modernist ambiguous open endings where even the author claims he doesn't know for shure?

  4. anon: Didn't he die of a broken heart? i've never read it though i guess i should give it a go. is it any good? is it some victorian gay love story? (shudders)

  5. by no means 'some victorian gay love story' - perish the thought dear :(

Isherwood is a good writer, modern yet not overly so - unlike, say, his near contemporary Virginia Woolf, whom, exquisite as she is, i can only take in small doses.

a single man is short - and crisp - so you can probably finish it in a seating or two, which, in these hectic days of shattered attention span, gives one such a sense of achievement. and the book is mostly written in a realist mood until the last few pages, which then switches into a fantasy mode, hence the ambiguity of the ending.

  6. Anon: Oh... now to hunt down a copy without the movie poster cover. I do hate novels that use the movie stills as cover art. I REFUSE to read them.

  7. oh i sooo agree re: movie poster cover. tacky doesn't even begin to describe it.

recently i bought a copy of love in the time of cholera and it features on the cover that bloody ugly glossy red rose from the 1987 movie. the rose pained me so much i had had to tear the cover off before i could start reading the novel...

  9. Anon: Hilarious. Did you REALLY tear the cover off? I just think it's too embarrassing, some of the covers to even take out to read in the train. Why don't you just wrap with brown paper or something? Btw, I thought the movie was so hammy and wrong.

  10. yes i really did, because i hadn't the patience to wrap it up.

i haven't seen the film version of love in the time of cholera, nor do i have the slightest wish to. these days i try as much as possible to stay away from movies based on literary works, esp. if i care for that particular novel. literature and film are two completely different media, and i would say 8 out 10 cases they don't mix...:(
