Men's Spring 2011: Bottega Veneta

I liked almost everything in this confident, unpretentious collection of subtly, but seriously, sensuous clothes. It's become designer Tomas Maier's signature, as he does this well, and often. But in this collection, the essence of what Mr Maier does atavistically (it seems) is so stripped down and reduced that its strengths are brought to the fore: The gorgeous tactile fabrications, the sensuous fit, the lovely colours (so beautiful they all looked like neutrals, even when they are not, in fact), the softness and the rumpled elegance. It's also romantic, without being pedantic - the unbuttoned bateau neck tops with shorts? It's straight out of 1982, but freshly squeezed.
