  1. i love the 70s precisely because of its pre-AIDS sleaze & sexual innocence. it was a time when people believed they could do anything and get away with it. hence a kind of downtown seedy bravura in sex, art, film, drugs etc.

i'm sorry, aunty karla's take by comparison is just too glossy, sterile & vaccinated...

  2. Dear Anon: I understand what you mean but I'm rather doubtful if people should be so naieve as to believe that they can 'do anything and get away with it'. This shoot by aunty karla is as you said 'sterile'. In fact, it seems rather pointless. Lara Stone is hardly Jerry Hall, they are not even the same type!

  3. yes, people in the 70s - the gays especially - should not have been so naive, or reckless, as to believe that their actions had had no consequences. but sadly that's exactly what happened, which i'm sure you know accounted for the AIDS epidemic when the hateful 80s rolled around.

i came out in the late 80s, in the States, and that was a really depressing time for gay people, with literally no hope in sight. the gays were dropping away like flies, esp. those in the media/arts/creative industries, as Dr David Ho's 1995/1996 breakthrough protease inhibitor cocktail therapy was still a good 6/7 years away.

that's why it's so amazing for old folks like me to see kids born in the 80s & 90s indulge in bareback sex nowadays, with nary a thought for infection as AIDS no longer seems like an imminent & unavoidable death sentence, but something medically manageable, like say hypertension or diabetes.

honestly, back in the late 80s if someone were to tell me that people would, within my lifetime, revert back to 70s style unsafe sexual practices with a vengeance, i would have thought the person completely gaga and certifiably mad...

  4. Dear Anon: I still think it's shockingly irresponsible, hubris in fact, to indulge in drug-fuelled bareback sex. It's greed isn't it? How much more pleasure can one get, etc?
Is it nihilism? Self-hatred? Would one knowingly and enthusiastically court hypertension or diabetes, however medically manageable? Did those that died of AIDS die in vain?
They are indeed "completely gaga and certifiably mad" IMHO.
