Beloved Baptiste, the Cross Eyed One, as Apollo in the 2011 Pirelli Calender. Photographed by Aunty Karla... with ropes of Komodo dragon-type drool dripping down his bespoke cravat.
i've decided i like aunty karla's works after all. the reason is that he has a certain european fin-de-siècle, almost decadent yet aristocratic vision. one used to get that a lot in the works of, oh, Luchino Visconti, Alain Resnais, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, or Helmut Newton even.
unfortunately one really doesn't see this style being practised much anymore in the 21st century does one?
ps: and abt damn time they put some beef in the Pirelli calendar. takes a gay man to get the priorities right.
Dear Erudite Anon: Don't get me wrong - Aunty Karla is a genius autuer; I'm just being ironic here, and hopefully funny. His obsession with BB though is ripe for satire isn't it?
of course i get the wink-wink irony that you do so well dear; loved the komodo-dragon saliva bit. :)
no, my little disquisition on aunty karla was just a culmination of a train of thought stared a day or two ago when i saw the spread aunty did for Numéro Homme Fall/Winter 2010, with BB, Jon K and Jake Davies.
i rather liked the spread, which was dark & brooding, and your post provided the perfect platform for me to crystallise some of the reasons why i like aunty's works so thank you. :)
Dear Erudite Anon: Not only is Aunty Karla Apollonian in his aesthetics, his output is prodigious - truly amazing for someone supposedly in his 70s. Truly worthy of worship!
