Eau Première

(Collectible miniature Eau Premiere with a pop-up couture salon with 'Chanel' looking on.)

Eau Première is the first new concentration of Chanel No 5 to be launched in over 20 years. An estimated 600 new fragrances are introduced annually, but this launch really sent shivers down my spine. Its iconic antecedent, Chanel No 5 (made its debut in 1921), is a perfume legend. It is estimated that a bottle is sold every 55 seconds somewhere in the world. Great pains are taken to ensure that it smells just as it did when launched. However, new interpretations of the scent are introduced – the last of these, by Jacques Polge, was Eau de Parfum back in the 1980s: "It is our job to protect the creation, and we make all types of effort in order that it remains the same. Every time there is a change in fashion or in women's habits of using perfume, instead of altering what already exists, we launch a new product. First came Eau de Toilette, then there was Eau de Parfum, and now Eau Première." This is a fine flanker to No 5—safely within the Chanel’s tradition. It's a fruity-floral, but not sweet, lighthearted but never silly, yet effervescent, warmer, without the formality and majesty of the original. And yet, there's no compromise in its depth and complexity. The powdery aldehydic top of No 5 has been made juicier, the base is brightened. The classic florals thus beam forth —rose, jasmine, ylang-ylang and iris - glowing. Eau Première is airier than No 5, it's sillage beautifully intimate. It's a Chanel jacket worn with a denim mini.

  1. there should be a scent that smells cummy so when you wear it, other women stare daggers at you. i think i want to buy those essence for making jelly at the supermart, like almonds and apples and dab them behind the ears as perfume before i make panty pudding. the men would surely swoon, no?
