Goodbye, Yves

I read with dismay the news that in a week, on Feb 23, Yves Saint Laurent’s hoard of treasures he ardently assembled during his illustrious career will be sold in an auction. The 733 lots, including art and paintings, expected to fetch some USD400 million, are from the opulent Aladdin’s cave he occupied at 55, rue de Babylone from 1969 until his demise last year. It will be a five-session, three-day auction to be held at the Grand Palais, the 19th-century exhibition hall where fashion spectacles, including the Rive Gauche collection, are staged today. The proceeds from the auction will go to benefit a foundation set up to finance AIDS research. The legendary apartment, a duplex in the 7th Arrondissement of Paris is entered from an interior courtyard and overlooks a garden. I’m bewildered that nothing is to remain to preserve this apartment as a museum, the way Chanel’s apartment at 31 rue Cambon is preserved, to inspire future generations. I can’t help feeling that it will be a grave loss.

  1. how to have peace of mind (my current hot topic) amidst so many things? but yes, it's a shame they don't make his home into a museum.

i sorta wish i had the fortune to live through his era.
