Literary Nose

Frederic Malle, the French perfumer, proclaims that his latest fragrance is one of his best ever. To celebrate his company’s 10th anniversary, Mr Malle teamed up with one of his favorite noses – Dominique Ropion - to create Portrait of a Lady, a heady mix including Turkish rose, raspberry, cassis, cinnamon, patchouli heart, ambroxan and musk. Available next month for USD280 (100 ml) at Barneys New York.

  1. i must admit: i've never been able to finish The Portrait of a Lady, despite numerous self-conscientious attempts. Isabel Archer is such an annoying & unsympathetic heroine - brimming with self-righteous moral earnestness that's still so prevalent in a certain type of modern cause-y American girls - that I always gladly abandoned her, half way through the book, to whatever wicked fates that await her at the end. and not a moment too soon, too.

But i love the opening scene: the leisurely taking of tea on a perfect English summer afternoon on a lawn. that's what the novel evokes for me: a fresh green grassy scent that's gold-tinged by long slanting sunlight...

  2. Dear Anon: I must admit... that I love this book! It's the quintessential Henry James isn't it? And so fully realised... Isabel Archer is America!!!
