I like this cover... for November, maybe? Isn't it awfully winter-y for August? And they say that this is Michelle Williams (does Ms Williams warrant a cover? Even if it's only an Interview cover?), but it could very well be anybody else. She even looks vaguely Asian, dosen't she?

And Who is This Snow Queen?

Interview August
Marion Cotillard, no doubt promoting the summer blockbuster Inception; Ms Cotillard is part of an excellent ensemble cast (Leonardo DiCaprio is the lead) that is entirely wasted in this mind-numbing movie. I think it says alot, and none of it pretty, that the movie-going public seems to have made this confused, confusing knot of a sci-fi thriller into a hit, and critics (who should know better) have been giving it raving reviews. I've seen it and found it a rambling, inchoate mass, incomprehensible by the 12th minute, emotionless and self-absorbed. The worst of it is the pretentious, would-be intellectualizing of this chase/heist drama, which in the end is merely generic, tricked up with set-piece visuals of the obssessive kind. It's awesome: only if you're seven, or if you've never seen a movie before. At an exhausting two and a half hours, it's too long by two hours.

The photos are by Mikael Jansson, half of it passable (nice cover), half of it truly banal.

Megan Fox/ Gaga Don't Preach

"I don’t want to open my mouth or speak anymore, because everything I say becomes scandalous. It wears you out. . . . So I’m a bit jaded. " —Megan Fox

Now who's the dummy here? The Craig Mcdean photos, which appear in June's Interview are in the well-trodden style of Helmut Newton and Guy Bourdin. I feel dumb typing that because it's such an obvious (and banal) thing, with so little re-invention or value add it makes me want to run back to bed and put on the eye shades and snooze till its 2020. Mr Mcdean has lost his way, slowly but surely and his work has, over the years, become as thin and bloodless as his visage. These photos are surely as unshocking, and unprovocative as the new Lady Gaga video Alejandro. In a sense they are the least new of all her videos, in the way it heavily, and humourlessly, trods the well trodden path that Madonna has made her own... 20 years ago? Where's the outrage? Even the Catholic iconography feels lazy and banal. It's just deja vu all the way, safely within the familiar territory of director Steven Klein's fashion work, it's merely a cheaply garbled remix of familiar Madonna videos like Express Yourself (1989, David Fincher), Vogue, Erotica etc. Even model Evandro Soldati's cameo is but a pale reflection of Cameron Alborzian's (British-Iranian) in Express Yourself.Gaga has been promoting the video as a tribute to gay people and the gay people have been wagging their tails but it's hard to see where the honour is. Do gay people see themselves as worshipful (of Gaga) S&M drones? Still? In 2010? How pathetic. Gaga don't preach.
Snooze... Wake me up when there's really something to see.

Weekend Reading List
Mona and her family were at BG's today half watching a French musical, half having a post-pizza snooze. We went straight into BG's room and she showed me all her new favourite perfumes (there weare so many that I ran out of body parts on which to spray them on for a sniff); Then she pushed her closet doors wide with a kick and pulled out some Pull & Bear shorts that she said I should buy; Next, she showed me some cast iron wood pigeon bookends and an antiqued wood frame that she said she bought from the Robinson's sale; And then I sat (gingerly) on her bed to study some photo albums from two decades ago. Horrors. Everyone looked so young then!
I left an hour later with a bag of reading that BG wanted to chuck, including Interview (Carey Mulligan - who is she???) filled cover to cover with cool people I don't recognise and am not interested in; The Penelope Cruz-edited Vogue Paris; Eight issues of Real Living (I've never heard of this title before); Two issues of Martha Stewart Living; Last month's Men's Non No (I can't remeber the last time I looked in one, although there were years in my life when I bought every issue!); And two issues each of Vanity Fair and Time (these my father can read). Then we went out to look at BG's plants which forms a thick screen that hides his door. A single passion fruit hangs like a jewel from its serpentine twine, green and glittering like a jade fruit.
