I've just finished reading the densely detailed Julie Kavanagh bio Nureyev: The Life. What a monster he was, a diva to put some of those fashion divas I know in the shade. A great awe-struck work of research though it is, I feel it's just a little too worshipful.
In these (in)famous Avedon portraits, shot soon after his defection from Russia, one sees his feral beauty (yes, it was no myth, like a horse): But oh, how brief and transient it was.
yes, transience, something that is too true and one i operate by these dayz. and where does he hide that in tights? but i've never ever fallen under his spell, not one bit.
ReplyDelete...And he got aroused during this shoot, and avedon captured it. i'm waiting for the day when those pictures will be released!
ReplyDeletehe was a very good friend of Saint Laurent's, wasn't he? by transience, do you mean his early passing?
ReplyDeleteVogueite, i meant his beauty was transient. I guess all beauty is transient, but he lost his hair very early! And to me that is always sad, because it does rob you off your youth immediately. A current example would be Prince William - he was so beautiful, for a couple of years and suddenly, balding, became an uncle. Yes, Nureyev was very much of the scene in Paris during YSL's heyday.
